The purpose of philanthropy is to facilitate social change. Today, there is an increased popularity of wealthy individuals and families participating in philanthropic activities. These families or individuals channel their funding through a primary foundation or via a network of organizations. However, very few foundations remain organized and able to coordinate their activities with excellence. DeVos family has managed to coordinate its philanthropic activities in a way that makes sense to the general public. The family amassed wealth after the launching of a direct marketing company that performed and still continues to perform well in the industry to date. Richard DeVos Sr. is the founder of Amway International. His net worth amounts to $5 billion making him one of the richest people in the US.

Philanthropic activities of DeVos family

DeVos family has been able to support the alternative education system such as home schooling and charter schools that are popularly known as School Choice. Flashing back to 2000, the majority of supporters of school choice from 25 states voted against the program. This left 13 active supporters. However, the program continues to this date. DeVos family has used its three philanthropic foundations to support the operation of this alternative education system. Most of their funding are directed to religious charities such as youth groups, faith-based charities, Christian School, and many parochial schools. The family funds Inner Christian Federation, which is an organization that specializes in offering emergency shelter as well as counseling service to homeless youths.

Facts about Dick DeVos 

Dick DeVos grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together with his brother Doug, they handle minor tasks that contributed to the growth of their family’s business. Their duties entailed greeting attendees at annual conventions held by Amway. DeVos gained the confidence of addressing a large group of people and providing product demonstrations. After completing his high school studies, he attended Northwood University and graduated with a business administration degree. The Northwood University has acknowledged him on several occasions due to his support for education causes.

Career history

DeVos started to work with Amway Corporation in 1974 and held supervisory as well as managerial positions. In 1984, he was promoted to the Vice President of the company. During his tenure, Amway International expanded its operation to over 18 countries. He left Amway and joined Orlando Magic Basketball as its President and Chief Executive Officer in 1991.
